Air Battle Central Front

The Air War in Central Europe, 1970-1990

Shortly before 0400 hours GMT this morning Warsaw Pact forces crossed the Inner German Border in force at several points and advanced into the area defended by Northern Army Group. Waves of enemy aircraft attacked targets in West Germany, Holland and Belgium with high-explosive and chemical weapons, causing widespread damage and casualties. There are no reports of nuclear weapons having been used.

RAF Jaguars in formationZULU ALERT is a game of air warfare over Central Europe in the late 20th Century.

The game models what might have happened had the Warsaw Pact invaded West Germany in the decades before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Focussing on operations of the 2nd and 4th Allied Tactical Air Force (2 and 4 ATAF) the game includes air forces of the United States, Britain, France, West Germany, Belgium and Holland as they try to stem the 'red tide'.

Based on a brand new air combat system, Zulu Alert will be the first true operational air combat system. Its focus will be on the management of air combat forces, with the player controlling basing, sortie generation, sortie surges, and the allocation of tactical air resources to recon and targets.

The ground war is abstracted, as the front line moves deep into Germany. The NATO player must allocate operations (Ops) against enemy strength concentrations at and behind the FEBA. It is vital to disrupt the movement of reserve echelons as well as the front line forces. In addition, targets such as airfields, MSRs, bridges, the power grid, depots, rail infrstructure, nuclear forces, headquarters, factories, shipping and ports will all compete for targeting attention.

Ops include CAS, BAI and strikes. Strikes comprise a number of components, including strike sorties, escort, SEAD and electronic warfare. Counterair sorties can be expended defensively, to stop enemy operations and offensively, to disrupt the enemy's counterair operations.

Zulu Alert is currently in the preliminary stages of development and will be designed by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood. No definite date for primary development has been set, as at least two other games are ahead of it in the production schedule.
